One thing that Mike and I almost always have in our fridge is Hummus. Usually, we don’t even plan on it – It’s an impulse buy as we’re nearing the checkout line at Whole Foods Market, with so many great flavors and brands to choose from! The store conveniently has tortillas on a shelf right below the hummus, everything I need for the perfect snack-wrap.
One brand we’ve brought home a number of times is Chef Earl’s (Mike especially loves their Baba Ghanoush). They are a local company (based in Chicago – yay!) that uses only natural ingredients – no artificial flavors or colors, no preservatives, and no GMO’s.
Already a fan, I was very excited when I was recently contacted with an opportunity to try their newest products: 4-packs of Single Serve Pods of Hot Giardiniera Hummus, Chunky Guacamole, and Mild Salsa – perfect for lunch-boxes or portion-controlled snacks at home.
At my first bite of the Hot Giardiniera Hummus, I had to ask myself – why have I not tried this amazing flavor before? A very “Chicago” flavor, Giardiniera is an assortment of spicy, pickled vegetables including peppers, celery, carrots, and cauliflower. These hot & sour veggies paired perfectly with the thick and creamy hummus. This stuff lives up to it’s name though – it is HOT. The cool celery sticks and sweet peppers I ate it with were the perfect pairing, though I think this would also make one heck of a sandwich spread!
As a lover of spicy foods, I wasn’t sure what I’d think about the Mild Salsa, but it actually turned out to have the perfect amount of heat. The spice is subtle on the first bite or two, but it certainly builds up. I don’t just dip my chips into salsa, I scoop it up like a shovel. I was happy that the salsa was thick enough to hold it’s shape on my chip, though I do wish the texture was chunkier.
My favorite of the three was the Chunky Guacamole. Holy Guacamole, this stuff was GOOD! In fact, if I were served this guac in a restaurant, I might send my compliments to the chef. Unlike most store-bought guacs, Chef Earl’s uses hand-scooped fresh Haas avocados and I could really tell – this guac was both creamy and chunky, with intact bits of avocado. And it had the perfect amount of fresh lime – Yum!
And did I mention that all 3 of these products are Vegan and Gluten-Free?
I also learned a couple more fun-facts about Chef-Earl’s from the materials I received with my samples:
1.) Chef Earl’s products are hand-crafted in small batches – no wonder they taste so good!
2.) They use a technology called High Pressure Processing (HPP), which uses cold water pressure to pasteurize fresh foods. This eliminates the need for any chemical preservatives, uses less energy than traditional pasteurization, and extends the shelf life by 2-3x a non-pasteurized product. I thought this was pretty cool!
